The Donut Couple

Few months back, I was really depressed. It’s not new, mental health is the second pandemic on rage next to Covid. When the lockdown eased in Ireland, like everyone I was in a rush to get outside. That’s when I met the Donut couple.

My friend and I travelled to the countryside. We didn’t plan anything in particular, we just kept driving and driving till we reached this small beach in Garretstown. We would have probably passed the beach too if not for this small white truck/café. A menu board listed coffees and donuts. Not willing to give this combo a miss, we waited in the queue.

As the queue got shorter, we could smell the delicious scent getting stronger. When it was our turn, we finally got to meet the couple behind the stand. The man was tall, stronger and had a thick moustache like a Texas ranger. The lady was shorter, blonde and motherly type. Their smile greeted us and I was immediately drawn. I smiled back at them as we ordered. Our order was 8 donuts and coffees. They were those mini donuts, fried in oil with toppings of our choice. The lady started getting busy with our order while the man smiled down at me. They fussed over us with the toppings. Chocolate syrup, sugar coating etc etc.

They waved us away with our promises of visiting them again. When we finally dug into our donuts, we realised we were given more than we had ordered. And we had paid for only 8. This kindness just rendered me speechless.

Two complete strangers had unknowingly lifted my spirits with their kindness. Their smiles and sweet gestures made me feel so good about myself again.

If each of us could do just smile and acknowledge each other, wouldn’t the world be a better place? At that moment, I felt I could face any number of pandemics without complaining.
